Building Relationships: An Interview with Makda Fessahaye

FGPM is thrilled to announce our most recent community leader Interview with Makda Fessahaye, attorney at law and Associate Vice Chancellor for Human Resources at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In her role, Makda oversees all human resources initiatives for UWM - which employs over 6,700 staff and serves more than 24,000 students - as well as consults to the University Chancellor's Cabinet, Deans, and shared governance on human resources related matters. Makda previously served in the cabinet of former Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and Mayor Cavalier Johnson as the City of Milwaukee’s Chief Human Resources Officer, as well as served within several recent administrations of note across the state of Wisconsin. Among her many accolades, Makda has been honored with the Wisconsin Women in Government Rising Star Award, Madison365's Most Influential Black Leaders, In Business Greater Madison's 40 Under 40, and Milwaukee Business Journal’s 40 Under 40.

From his twenty years on the City of Milwaukee Municipal Court bench to his new opportunity at Marquette University Law School’s Lubar Center for Public Policy Research & Civic Education, Derek Mosley is an advocate for Milwaukee. His dedication to his communities have done the work to change perspectives and highlight biases, while showing us that everyone has a story to tell and value to bring to our city. His compassion and fairness on the bench, plus his welcoming and positive demeanor, inspire us to be better versions of ourselves. FGPM President Molly Madonia sat with Judge Mosley to discuss topics such as finding the best community service opportunities for your passions, the importance of mentorship and building community, and how we can adopt the principles of his Unconscious Bias training in our daily lives by positively engaging with those different from us.
