Small Talk for a Big First Impression: Easy Conversation Starters for Young Professionals

Effective networking will be a meaningful skill throughout your career.

By preparing introductory questions, or icebreakers, you can enter a conversation with confidence.

“Dr. Susan Miller, a speech pathologist and vocal coach in Washington, D.C., agrees that conscious preparation is important. ‘Think about what you might say,’ she says. ‘Have an intention every time you enter a conversation’” (2).

From seeking new connections, to seeking a new job, your next opportunity may begin with a simple question.

Ask about the Event or Conference

These questions are great for brand new connections. They will give an opportunity for both participants to share a unique opinion about a mutual interest.

  1. Have you been here before? This my [xth] time attending.

  2. What do you think of the keynote speaker?

  3. Which of the panels has been most enjoyable for you [or most applicable to your job] so far?

Ask about their job

Asking about a connection’s careerpath is a classic, yet interesting, follow-up question.

  1. How long have you been with this company?

  2. What's the most interesting project you completed recently?

  3. How did you get into the industry?

Conversation going well? Personalize it.

If you are enjoying the conversation, feel free to engage in a personal, yet appropriate way by asking these questions.

  1. Are you a member of this professional organization [hosting the event]?

  2. Are you listening to any interesting [professional and entertainment] podcasts?

  3. Are you a [home town sports team] fan?

  4. Do you have any advice as I begin my career [with this company/in this industry]?

Ultimately, the key to making real connections is to show a genuine interest.

By asking simple, yet meaningful, questions, you can meet new and interesting people, as well as build a strong network. These questions do not need to be complicated and hopefully you can build rapport through a meaningful exchange of questions and answers. Be sure to ask for a card or or connect on LinkedIn to stay up-to-date on your new connection!
