Common coffee preparations

For those that enjoy a good ol’ cup of hot bean juice, or simply want to switch up your favorite morning beverage , check out this list of common coffee preparations. Definitely test them out and find one that works for you!

Black (or cafe noir, if you're fancy):

Coffee beans are ground to your desired size, which depends on your brewing method

From there, hot water is run through the grounds to brew a piping hot cup of your morning go go juice.

Need just a splash more flavor? Go with a Cafe au Lait by adding just a splash of your favorite warm milk.

Espresso:

Served in one ounce cups, this brewing method consists of running hot water through finely ground, densely-packed coffee.

This preparation contains more caffeine than coffee so proceed with caution! Espresso “shots” are often mixed into other drinks for an added pep. For maximum fanciness, refer to your double shot as a doppio.

For those burning the midnight oil, you may be interested in a Red Eye - a single espresso shot mixed into a black coffee.

Espresso has a robust history. Check out the citations below to learn more!

Americano:

If you like the espresso preparation, try an Americano!

This beverage begins with espresso and then adds hot water, usually to about 6-8 ounces for a single espresso.

For a double shot, try at least 12 ounces.

Latte:

A popular drink combining espresso and steamed milk (of your choice), served with or without a foam topping.

Try with a flavor shot, in regular or sugar free!

Cappuccino:

A popular latte, the cappuccino is, “an Italian coffee drink that is traditionally prepared with equal parts double espresso, steamed milk, and steamed milk foam on top.”

Because there is more foam than a traditional latte preparation, there is a slightly higher caffeine content.

Like the idea of a double shot, but no time for a foam? Try a Flat White, which endeavors to present the thinnest, “flattest” amount of foam possible.
